Moor Monkton History
Moor Monkton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a small settlement belonging to “Richard, son of Herfast”. Herfast was a Norman who arrived in England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. He became the first Lord Chancellor of England. The name Monkton means “the farm of the monks”. Originally known as “Monkton”, “Moor” was added in various incarnations and spellings of the name in the 1400s. It was done to distinguish it from Nun Monkton, which is another nearby village, the other side of the River Nidd.
