Moor Monkton Village
This small village is at the end of a road that spurs a mile and a half north from the A59 road. The River Nidd is to the immediate north, with the River Ouse to the east. The village used to have a railway link at the Marston Moor railway station on the Harrogate Line, though this station closed in 1958. However, the signal box was given Grade 2 listed building status in July 2013.
Book Share
When BT decommissioned the local phone box the opportunity arose for the village to purchase the structure. After extensive and careful refurbishment it now acts as a book share facility for the avid readers of Moor Monkton.
It also contains a map of the village area to help local delivery (and other) visitors
Pop-up Pub
Although there is no pub in the village there is a regular “pop-up” pub "The Merry Monk" that takes place on the last Friday of the month and other festive occasions. During the colder months the venue is the Old School Room, whilst in the summer the pub often appears in local gardens and takes on a role associated with picnics and barbecues.
The Old School Room
The village hall (officially known as the Old School Room) was bequeathed to 'The people of the parish of Moor Monkton' in the first half of the last century. For many years it saw valuable service and a dedicated team laboured to maintain the hall in a useable condition. In the 1990's however the building gradually became less inviting as damp, cold and subsidence took their toll on the old building.
In 1997 The Millennium Committee was formed with the express intention of doing something substantial for the village in the year 2000. The need for a modern village hall was identified and after looking at various options, it was decided by a vote of parishioners to re-furbish the Old Schoolroom. In 1999 the village was awarded a Lottery grant to redevelop its village hall.
The refurbishment work was completed in December of the same year. The new hall is light, airy, dry and above all warm. It is well equipped with a fully fitted kitchen and a second floor meeting room. The Schoolroom Committee, under the auspices of The Richard Kay Charity and the Moor Monkton Village Association, organises regular fund raising events to help maintain the building.
